Concept

“Quantified Self - Self Knowledge Through Numbers” is a movement which systematically tracks ones own body, behaviour, nutrition and health by means of a digital gadget. ‘Health-apps’, ‘live-tracker’, ‘lifelogging’, ‘selftracker’ and ‘self-hacking’ are all keywords related to this trend. What makes the movement more than just a fad is the fact that “Quantified Self” unites two major social currents of our time: the desire for human perfection with the belief in the blessing of digital technologies.

Research

Over four weeks we monitored ourselves in a self-test with exactly those fitness gadgets and apps. By means of this experiment we take a closer look at the two currents, collect data and draw comparisons. We summarize and present our research by splitting it into four main sections (health, time, finances, consumption).

Drafts

Each section has three levels: level no.1: information about the collected data, level no.2: the emerging digitalization and level no.3: a superordinate subject. We support our findings and messages with diagrams, inforgraphics and illustrations. While often being stripped-down they should, in combination with the text, be thought-provoking.

My task was to realize the concept creatively, with the main focus being on the tension between the image- and text levels. How far can you displace the information content in the layout and let the reader be blinded by aesthetic diagrams? The diagrams and infographics were conceived and designed equally by both.

Coverdrafts

One of my tasks was also to design the cover with several drafts. It was important for us to meet the aesthetics of the interior as accurately as possible. It was also supposed to attract the reader to the aesthetic graphics.

Concept

Due to my self-employment besides my studies, I was already able to realize my first projects independently, from planning, conception, design and implementation. Together with the client, I developed various attributes ("focus on typography", "large fontsize" and "little motion"), which were then implemented graphically. In order to be able to accommodate the small budget of the young curator, only a typeface of the "JHA Times Now" by Jan Henrik Arnold was purchased and supplemented with a typeface of Helvetica, which is available on many systems.

Mobil

In order to be able to operate the website well on mobile devices, it was ensured from the outset that the typography would always adapt to the screen width via "viewport units". Afterwards, only a few details had to be adapted to the smaller screen sizes using "Media Queries".

Drafts

With the help of the attributes developed, the design process quickly led to a result with which both sides are satisfied. Thanks to constant feedback, I was able to quickly create the website together with the customer from the first draft to the finished website.

Animated Poster

In addition to my projects, I would like to give further insights into my work process with smaller experiments. With these works I wanted to try to combine the field of animation with the medium of the poster. The Clickball-Cup poster was also shown in the book "100 beste plakate“ in the article about moving posters.

Animated Lyrics

In my semester abroad I used a video course to further develop my animation skills. For this I animated the lyrics of "Ghostpoet - (We're) Dominoes". I tried to blur the borders between 2D & 3D and therefore worked with Photoshop, After Effects and Blender. Here you can see the complete video.
